Hotel Hafen Hamburg celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Many years ago Willi Bartels fell in love with the magnificent building at Hamburgs harbour and took it on as his new project. The building of today's hotel looks back on an interesting history that began in the 19th century.

Since the laying of the foundation stone in 1858, the hotel has served as a sailors' home and was able to accommodate up to 24 sailors at the same time, offering them a meal and a place to sleep for 2 marks. The offer was very well accepted and the house became more popular. During the 1st and 2nd World Wars the building was then confiscated by the Royal Navy and converted into a training centre for marines. After the end of the war the house was released and returned to its former function - sailors' home.

After a few years, despite the good condition of the building, the property was in need of renovation, which led to the closure of the home. Thus began a new era for the house at the Elbe. The couple Bartels took over the building and transformed it into a hotel with 105 rooms. Since then, the hotel has been continuously expanded, rebuilt and modernised to offer a total of 380 rooms, 2 restaurants, 2 bars and 7 conference rooms for national and international guests. Regardless of the renovations and construction projects that have taken place over the past 40 years, the Hotel Hafen Hamburg has always remained true to its origins and maritime flair.
