Reopening of Restaurant Port

Hamburg, 12th June 2020

Setting sail for new shores: After a three-month refurbishment phase and an investment of around three million euros, the restaurant Port at the Hotel Hafen Hamburg is reopening its doors. Following its 40th anniversary last year, the restaurant in this traditional Hanseatic hotel has undergone a full renovation and now features a new, high-quality interior and food concept. Alongside a revised menu, the new Port has been expanded to include its own bar, offering cocktail creations and small snacks in the evening. The adjoining terrace with views of the Elbe River features heated seating benches, making it suitable for use even on colder days. From now on, both residents of Hamburg and hotel guests can enjoy traditionally North German dishes – and, for the first time, delicious grilled specialities – in the newly refurbished restaurant, while as ever taking in views of the harbour and the Landungsbrücken.

Surrounded by historical ship models, the team at Restaurant Port served regional and seasonal specialities for 40 years against the backdrop of the Hamburg harbour. Even after the refurbishment, the maritime heritage remains present for all guests – however, the interior has been redesigned to be more elegant and modern: alongside telescope-style lamps, 583 handcrafted wall tiles, wood-panelled details and petrol-coloured seating create a relaxed yet refined Hanseatic atmosphere for culinary enjoyment. A digitally controlled lighting and climate system ensures optimal temperature and lighting conditions. The integration of a Bose entertainment system, combined with a newly developed acoustic concept, has also improved the room’s sound quality. In total, the newly renovated premises can accommodate 187 guests, with a further 80 seats available on the 170-square-metre summer terrace.

“With the new Port, we aim to offer all Hamburg residents and, of course, our hotel guests a modern culinary experience in a stylish setting,” says Enrico Ungermann, Director of the Hotel Hafen Hamburg. “The interior concept reflects our connection to the Hamburg harbour and the history of our establishment through selected colours, materials and accessories such as maritime collectibles and figureheads. We have also reworked our food offering – our selection of typical Hanseatic dishes such as labskaus or Hamburg-style panfish is now complemented by Faroese salmon fillet and grilled rib-eye steak. In addition to the integrated bar, we can now also offer guests a separate area, the ‘Kleine Port’, for celebrations and smaller groups.”

The Culinary sails are set

The new concept combines North German classics with grilled specialities. Alongside hearty dishes, guests can also enjoy beer, cocktails or roast beef sandwiches in a relaxed atmosphere at the bar. Fish and meat dishes are accompanied by seasonal sides and homemade sauces, created by head chef Martin Eggert and his team.

“One highlight in our new kitchen is definitely the ‘Beefer’,” says Eggert. “This device can reach temperatures of up to 800 degrees Celsius, allowing us to prepare freshly grilled dishes with a unique sear in a very short time. With our new menu, we have deliberately chosen to offer a mix of delicious fish dishes, grilled specialities and smaller plates – there really is something for every occasion and taste.”

To accompany the food, the wine list offers around 20 European wines, including a variety of grape varieties ranging from Grauburgunder from Germany to Tempranillo from Spain and Pinot Bianco from Italy.
